Pop Goes Terry’s Calf Muscle

Terry's broken. Again. | Townsquare Media, Mary Coakley

Last week I leaned over to pick up one of my son’s toys off the floor and I felt something “pop” in my calf muscle that was immediately followed by the sensation of water running down my leg, and then searing, blinding pain.

Assuming that I had just pulled a muscle, I did my best to hobble around and aside from a few aches and pains, my leg started feeling better.

Until this morning when I tore all the muscles around my calf.

I wish I could say I was doing something awesome like playing some sort of sport, or rescuing children from a burning building, but I was just dropping off Jack at Grandma’s house for the day.

I opened the back door to my Chevy HHR and reached in to get Jack’s bag. I saw that his drink had fallen on the floor in front of his car seat so I leaned over to get it. Bad move. Whatever injury I started in my calf last week, I finished today. I felt three immediate pops in my calf, and something slide down toward my ankle. I almost dropped to the driveway in a sobbing heap.

Once I finally made it to the Emergency Room–after going in to work and finishing my show (the show must go on!)–my doctor explained that I had torn the muscles last week, and this morning I shredded them. The main calf muscle and the Achilles are intact though, which means I probably won’t require surgery to repair the damage.

I’m gonna level with you, this hurts. It hurts a lot. Really a lot. I’m hobbling around in a boot to immobilize my ankle with orders to rest as much as possible. I have to make an appointment with an orthopedist for next week to see what kind of therapy to expect and how long my recovery will take.

I’ll keep you guys posted. In the meantime, I need to be fitted for my bubble.

Why Do Farmers Still Burn Their Fields?

Terence WestAs I headed home last night, I turned on to Highway 30 and started toward Buhl. Immediately I could see huge plumes of smoke that appeared to be coming from somewhere right outside of Twin, but as drove I found the smoke was actually emanating from Filer.

Several fields were on fire almost directly across from Filer High School, and smoke was choking the city of Filer. Continue reading “Why Do Farmers Still Burn Their Fields?”

Avengers Assemble!

My son Jack, the future Avenger. And yes, that's me as Iron Man.

My 3-year-old son Jack is currently a huge Avengers fan. He loves Iron Man, The Hulk, and Thor, but far and away his favorite Avenger is Captain America. He has one of those frisbee Captain America shields with him at all times now. It even has dog teeth marks where he had to wrestle it away from the neighbor dog after a fateful battle.

Lately he’s been watching the new Avengers cartoon on Disney’s XD and really enjoying it, but I’m worried that he may not enjoy the movie this summer as much as the cartoons. Continue reading “Avengers Assemble!”

How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Cut The Cable (And You Can Too)

Terry's Cool Streaming Setup

How many times have you been sitting in front of the television and flipping through your 200+ channels only to remark “there’s nothing on?” I hate that. There’s nothing worse than having all of those channels and not being able to find anything to watch. It’s a waste of time and money.

So I cut the cord. Not literally, but I did have a friend once who was so perturbed at his cable service that he actually ripped the coaxial cable out of the wall and cut it. That’s a little extreme in my book, but I did find a way to stop paying for cable and switch over to a digital alternative for just $7.99 a month. You can too.
